Onnenvirta – A Finnish Historical Opera

Onnenvirta is a new Finnish opera composed by Auri-Helena Nikkinen with a libretto by Eini Annukka Perälä.

Set in the Kymenlaakso region of Finland, the opera explores love, family, loss, resilience and the possibility of reconciliation after conflict. Through personal stories spanning generations, Onnenvirta reflects on the wounds left by war and the enduring human capacity for hope and forgiveness.

The story moves between the present day and the early twentieth century. A young music student, Aada, discovers an old notebook that reveals the lives of people whose destinies were shaped by the Finnish Civil War and the rapid industrialisation of the region. As past and present intertwine, forgotten voices return to tell their stories.

Aada and Jere, whose search for the past reveals forgotten lives and hidden connections across generations.

At its heart, Onnenvirta is a human drama about ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances. It portrays the experiences of women, children, workers and families, alongside the story of a compassionate mill manager whose life is also profoundly affected by the turmoil of war. By presenting perspectives from both sides of a divided society, the opera explores the human cost of conflict and ultimately offers a message of understanding, healing and reconciliation.

Märta and Gösta Björkenheim. A respected mill manager and his family find their lives forever changed by the turmoil of the Civil War.

Hilda and Anton Anttila. Through their family´s experiences, the opera portrays the resilience, sacrifices and hopes of ordinary people during a turbulent period in Finnish history.

Auri-Helena Nikkinen’s music combines lyrical melodies, dramatic intensity and emotional accessibility. Drawing inspiration from the Finnish musical tradition while speaking in a contemporary voice, the score seeks to engage both opera enthusiasts and new audiences alike.

The world premiere of Onnenvirta will take place in 2026 in Kymenlaakso, Finland.
